New Features FAQ

While we're confident you'll find Quia's new features easy to use, we want to make sure you have all the information you need to get started. Below are answers to questions you may have. If your question is not here, please contact Quia support, and we'll be happy to help you out.

What happened to my account?

Welcome—your account has been upgraded for the new and improved Quia for Fall 2008. Though Quia may look very different upon first logging in, take a look around and we think you'll quickly understand and love what you see.

Our convenient new left-hand navigation menu and class manager system eliminate the hassle of locating appropriate tabs and sub-tabs, while improving the functionality of all your favorite Quia tools.

If you have more questions or concerns about the upgrade, keep reading!

I'm looking at the left menu and can't figure out how to find and edit my class pages. What happened to class pages?

Don't worry, all of your class pages, like the rest of your account and information, have made it through the upgrade.

Class pages now have a one-to-one relationship with classes, so that every class has one page associated with it, and vice-versa. So, by clicking on the Classes link in the left menu, you can see information about all of your classes, including how to view and edit the associated web page.

If you had a class page before the upgrade that had no class associated with it (no students on the roster), we've created an empty class to go with it, but the old class page and URL are still fully functional.

If you had a class page being used for multiple classes (with separate rosters), we've created a separate copy of the class page for each class. From now on, you'll be able to edit them individually, so that each class has independent assigning and grading features.

What is my profile? What's the difference between profiles and class web pages?

Your profile is a place where you can display information about yourself, link to your classes, quizzes, activities, surveys, and more. It provides one personalized link you can share with students, parents, and colleagues for easy access to all the materials you've created. Students and other teachers can even find the page by searching for your name—so they'll never have to remember a URL again.

Read more on the benefits of using your profile.

You'll only ever have one profile for your Quia account, and it includes everything you want to display—current activities, future assignments, surveys for other educators, material from expired classes, and so on. It has links to your class web pages, which are specific to a certain subset (class) of students. A class web page is where students go to find activities and quizzes that are assigned, or class-specific messages, deadlines, and so on.

Why don't I show up in the "Find a teacher" search results?

The "Find a teacher" feature is designed to help educators develop and maintain collaborative connections with other educators. Thus, only active educational subscribers show up here. All trial accounts, all expired accounts, and all corporate users (active or expired) will not appear in search results. Active educational subscribers who have hidden their profiles will also not appear in search results.

To enable your profile for use, click Account in the banner at the top of the window and select the Enable profile check box.

When I try to go to my profile URL, why does it say "Invalid URL"?

You may have hidden your profile. To enable displaying your profile, click Account in the banner at the top of the window and select the Enable profile check box.

My profile is empty right now; how can I fill it up with everything I've created on Quia?

Take a look at the My Profile icon in the left menu right now. Whenever you see that icon, there's an activity, quiz, class, or survey that can be added to your profile.

If the icon appears gray, the corresponding item is not yet displayed on your profile, so click the icon to turn it blue—this means the item is now displayed on your profile.

You will find these icons on your Activities, Quizzes, Classes, and Surveys pages.

If you want to do a mass action, such as adding all of your activities at once, select all of the check boxes at the very right of the list of activities, then click the Other Actions drop-down list and select Add to profile.

I want to add all of my classes, but some of them won't appear on my profile. What happened?

Ended classes never appear on your profile, so check the date you set your class to end. You can make an ended class active again by clicking Classes in the left menu, then click the Edit link for the appropriate class. Here you can set the end date to a date in the future or clear the field out for a class that never expires.

How can I assign activities? How can I track results?

Several instructors have requested a way to track the amount of time students practice activities, and now you can!

First, assign the activities you want to track to a class using the Assign link next to each activity on the Activities page. Alternately, you can go to the Activities page and select the check boxes for all activities to be assigned, then click the Other Actions drop-down list and select Assign to class. In the Assign to class module that appears, select the class who should see this assignment. Once you are done, Quia will log the practice time of students in that class who log in and practice the activity, in the gradebook. Use this data to review which activities students love, who's been spending a lot of time practicing, and the impact of your activities on student performance. Note that it may take several minutes for activity statistics to display on this page after a student plays the activity.

How can I assign quizzes and activities?

Click the Assign link next to each quiz or activity name, or select the check boxes for multiple quizzes/activities, then click the Other Actions drop-down list and select Assign to class. Either way, an Assign to class module appears, where you can select the class(es) who should see this assignment. Once you are done, quiz or activity results for students in those classes will be logged in your gradebook.

Why did it take so long to log in (or for my activity or class page to load)?

We were upgrading your account! It won't take that long ever again—once your account is upgraded it stays upgraded.

The upgrade created your profile, and made some improvements to the way classes and activities work. Click here for an overview of new features.
